Cybersecurity: Prevention, Deterrence, & Recovery (PDR)

The purpose of the SENTINEL PDR class is to educate and train public safety professionals on important concepts in securing public safety networks. Specific system attacks are analyzed, including data repository, mobile data terminal, emergency responder communication, and internet-based attacks. Participants will learn attack preparation, identification, and active defense techniques.

The class is designed primarily for those who assist or maintain computer and network operations for their organization. Subjects include detection (e.g., anti-virus programs), interdiction (e.g., passwords, system patches, firewalls), critical infrastructure protection (e.g., e-mail attachments, program downloads and installation, back-up policies, file and folder security), and information sharing (e.g., secure transfer of XML data).

Some of the objectives of PDR are listed below:

  • Understanding of the technical concepts and importance of proper detection mechanisms for network security and cyberterrorism prevention.

  • Understanding of the technical concepts and importance of proper interdiction mechanisms for network security and cyberterrorism prevention including implementation of interdiction tools including but not limited to passwords, system patches, and firewalls.

  • Understanding of the technical concepts and importance of critical infrastructure protection methodology for network security and cyberterrorism prevention.

  • Understanding of the technical concepts and importance of proper information sharing methods for network security and cyberterrorism prevention.
